What to expect during the test

Adenosine, Persantine and Dobutamine are all used for people who cannot exercise vigorously on a treadmill. Instead of vigorous exercise to increase blood flow to the heart, one of these chemicals is used to cause a response in your heart that will simulate exercise. You may or may not be asked to perform some light arm or leg exercises during the chemical infusion. These chemicals are extremely accurate in allowing us to assess the blood flow to your heart during stress.

When you arrive for your appointment, you will first receive an injection (in a vein in your arm) of Myoview. Myoview is a radioactive medicine that will be taken up by your heart muscle and allow the technologist to image the blood flow to your heart. Myoview does not contain any iodine and there are no side effects at all from this injection.

After the injection, the Myoview needs to circulate for approximately 30 minutes. During this time, you may eat whatever you like, with the exception of caffeine. PLEASE BRING A SNACK. (Note: If your arrival time is 11:30, you will be given an injection and then allowed to go to lunch. You will return at 1:00 to 1:15.) You will then have the first set of images, called the "Rest images", taken. This will last approximately 20 minutes.

Next you will be set up for the "stress" portion of the test. EKG leads will be placed on your chest. We will infuse the chemical that your doctor ordered for you. Your doctor will be present during the infusion.

Occasionally, patients may experience symptoms such as flushing, elevated heart rate, burning sensations in the chest or headache during the chemical infusion. This will usually subside very quickly on its own, however, if it does not we have medications we can give you to reverse the effects of the chemical.

After the infusion is complete, another dose of Myoview will be given to you through your IV. A second set of images, called the "Stress images", will be taken in approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

After the test

You will be able to drive home as usual. There are no side effects from Myoview.

In most circumstances, you may call the technologist the next day for your results. The results are also faxed and sent to the physician who referred you here. If you do not hear from us within 2 days, please call the office.
